More data on the wrist creates a specific failure: you start optimising the things the watch shows you rather than the things that cost you strokes, because those are the things in front of you.
Greens in regulation is the classic example. It is prominent, easy to track, and treats a ball on the front fringe and a ball in the trees as the same event. Strokes gained does not, and the difference between them is often two full shots.
AVA prices everything against a scratch baseline so the ranking comes from cost rather than from what happened to be displayed. Frequently the top finding is something the watch never surfaced.
With a club on most shots across a whole season, one question becomes answerable that almost never is: is my miss the same shape in every club, or is it club-specific?
Same shape in every club is a setup and alignment pattern. The answer is to aim at it and commit, worth about a stroke a round for the price of changing where you point, with no practice at all.
Club-specific is different: it usually means loft, lie or a gapping problem in that part of the bag, and it is a bench visit rather than a lesson. Two very different prescriptions, and you can only tell them apart with complete club data.
An up-and-down percentage blends two separate things: how often you needed to scramble, and how good you were at it. Improving the first is usually far cheaper than improving the second.
In the round above the short game cost −1.83, and nearly all of it was a single chip from eighteen yards that went out of bounds. The other two short-game shots were fine. What kept putting you in that position came earlier: −2.09 off the tee and −2.34 on approach, over a nine that hit three greens.
AVA separates the two and tells you which one is actually costing you. For most golfers who think they need short-game practice, the honest answer is that they need one more club into the green.
