The most valuable finding needs no club data at all
Look at the gapping ladder in the sample session. Two clubs covering the same six yards, and a seventeen-yard band beneath them that nothing covers. That is worth several shots a round, and it comes entirely out of carry numbers.
It is also invisible on a course. You stand over a yardage that falls in the hole, take a bit more club, swing a bit softer, and file the result under 'poor shot'. Two or three times a round, for years.
One focused session on an original SkyTrak finds it. A bench visit fixes it. No club delivery data was involved at any point.
The second most valuable finding is your real yardage
The single most expensive habit in indoor practice is writing down an average carry and treating it as a yardage. It is the middle of a distribution, and roughly half your shots land short of it.
In the sample session only 38% of 7-irons finished within five yards of the average, which is exactly why the typical amateur approach miss is short, over and over again.
AVA reads the whole distribution instead of the mean and gives you the number you can commit to. Ball data is entirely sufficient for that, and acting on it is worth more than most swing changes.
Where the older unit runs out, and what to do about it
The honest limit is attribution. When your miss is a consistent curve, ball data tells you the shape but not the cause, and face-dominant and path-dominant misses need opposite fixes.
You have two ways round it that don't involve buying anything. One: get a single session on a club-measuring unit (a fitting, an indoor bay, a lesson) and export it. One good file is enough to settle the question, and AVA will hold it against your SkyTrak history.
Two: let your rounds answer it. AVA reads tracked rounds alongside sessions, and a miss that shows up in the bag but never costs you on the card is a different problem from one that shows up on every approach.
Original SkyTrak questions, answered
Is my original SkyTrak too old to be useful?
No. It measures the ball well, and the two highest-value findings in most sessions (a gapping hole and an unreliable yardage) come entirely out of ball data.
What am I actually missing versus SkyTrak+?
Attribution. Ball data shows you the shape of a miss; club delivery tells you whether it is a face pattern or a path pattern. Those need opposite fixes, so it matters, but it is one category of conclusion, not all of them.
Can AVA estimate my club path from ball data?
It could, and it won't. Presenting a modelled number with the same confidence as a measured one is how golfers end up rebuilding a swing to fix a grip. AVA says what the file supports.
Does the ball I hit matter?
For spin, a lot. Use one consistent premium ball when you care about descent angle and holding greens; AVA weighs spin from range and foam balls accordingly.
Will old sessions still upload?
Yes, and years of them is better than one. History is what turns a snapshot into a trend.
