Gapping is the whole reason to own a Mevo
The Mevo measures carry, in volume, cheaply and portably. That is precisely the input needed for the highest-value finding in launch monitor data: a hole in the middle of your bag.
Look at the ladder in the sample session: two clubs covering the same six yards, and a seventeen-yard band beneath them with nothing in it. That costs strokes every round and it is completely invisible on a golf course, because on a course you just take more club and hope.
You do not need spin axis or attack angle to find it. You need carry numbers from enough shots per club, which is exactly what a Mevo produces.
Your average is not your yardage
The second finding the Mevo supports fully is the one most golfers get wrong. An average carry is the middle of a distribution, and roughly half your shots land short of it.
In the sample session only 38% of 7-irons finished within five yards of the average. Play to that average and you finish short more often than not, which is exactly the pattern approach data shows for nearly every amateur.
AVA reads the whole distribution rather than the mean and gives you the number you can commit to. That is worth more than most swing changes and it costs nothing.
Stickers, balls and net sessions
Three practical things determine how much of your Mevo data is worth trusting. Use the metallic stickers if you care about spin: without them spin is estimated rather than measured, and every conclusion about holding greens softens with it.
Use one consistent premium ball for the same reason. A foam ball in a garage net does not spin like a Pro V1, and averaging the two produces a number that describes neither.
And know what a net costs you. Radar needs flight; into a net the ball is gone in eight feet, so impact-adjacent numbers stay solid while carry becomes more heavily modelled. AVA reads a net session as a strike session and takes your yardages from outdoor and on-course data.
Mevo questions, answered
Is a Mevo enough to be worth analysing?
Yes. The two findings that cost most golfers the most strokes (a gapping hole and an unreliable yardage) both come out of carry data, which is what a Mevo does well.
What can't AVA tell me from a Mevo file?
Whether a curve is a face pattern or a path pattern, and it won't build a side-dispersion pattern from numbers the unit doesn't report. Those need a Mevo+ or an X3, and AVA says so rather than modelling them.
Do I need the metallic stickers?
For spin, yes. They move spin from estimated to measured, and descent-angle conclusions depend on it. For gapping and carry work, you can skip them.
Does it work into a net?
For strike work, yes: club speed, ball speed and smash factor hold up. Carry is more heavily modelled indoors, so AVA reads a net session as a strike session and takes yardages from your outdoor data.
Is it worth upgrading to a Mevo+?
Only if your open question is attribution. If you have not yet fixed your gapping and settled your real yardages, a Mevo has more to give you than an upgrade does.
