GOLFSHOT + AVA GOLF
Golfshot is built for the shot in front of you. Yardage to the front, a club recommendation, a green you can see the shape of before you get there. On the course, that is exactly the right job.
What it leaves undone is the season. A stats page tells you your greens-in-regulation percentage and your average score, then leaves you to decide which line matters, and that decision almost always defaults to whatever you already suspected about your game.
AVA prices every measure in strokes against a scratch baseline, which puts driving, approach play, short game, putting and penalties on one comparable scale. The order that comes back is usually not the order golfers expect, and it is the order worth practising.
Any app that recommends a club is working from a number for that club. If that number is a best-case distance rather than a reliable one, every recommendation built on it is a little too optimistic, and the misses stack up in one direction.
That is exactly the pattern in the round above: nine of sixteen tracked approaches finished off the green, eleven of them played from rough or sand after two fairways from seven. The approach number is where it shows up; the tee is where it started.
Finding it takes shot-level history and something willing to rank what it costs you. That is the half a GPS app was never trying to do.
Look at the scorecard above. Two holes did the damage: a 7 on the par-4 2nd and a 6 on the par-4 9th, five shots between them, with two penalty strokes in the round. The other seven holes came in at level par between them.
This is the most common shape in amateur scoring, and it means the fastest route to a lower handicap is usually not better golf. It is fewer disasters: a 3-wood where the trouble sits at 250, a wedge back into play instead of the hero shot, one more club into a front pin.

Not a reliable one. AVA's CSV import is built around shot-level launch monitor and simulator files, and a Golfshot export does not map onto it cleanly enough to trust the output. We would rather tell you that than half-read your season.
That is the plan, and it is the reason to keep recording. Your rounds live in your Golfshot account, and a connection reads history rather than starting from the day it is switched on.
